Following on from the DynaTAC series, in the early 90s, Motorola launched new brick phones that were 2cm less deep, but otherwise the same size. They were sold in large numbers, until much smaller phones became more popular. In the US these bricks were made up until the late 90s and many people in rural areas still use them because they have a better range than modern phones. In the UK the last of the bricks was the 888 made up until 1995.

Strangely, after the launch of these thinner phones, Motorola then brought out the Independent and Pulsar, which were the same size as the old DynaTACs. They did not sell well, and consequently not many have survived.

This new in the box phone that was made for the US market in the mid 90s, is perfect and unused. The phone still has the protective film on and is in perfect condition. We powered it up with the battery supplied, which holds some charge, and everything worked like new.

The box is tatty and has sticky tape and writing on it. The plastic insert has a crack in it. The case, antenna and user manual are as new. The battery is in excellent condition, although it does not have the protective tape on and so may not be original to the phone. This phone can be charged by plugging the correct adaptor directly into the side, but that adaptor was missing, so we have replaced it with a charging stand in very good condition and a brand-new non-original adaptor (that will only fit the stand and will not plug directly into the phone).

This new in the box phone is in near perfect condition. It has the protective film on the top, but it has been removed from the base and there are tiny marks there, so it may have been displayed at some point. This is the last brick phone ever made for the UK market and this phone is likely to be an unsold return. We powered it up with the battery supplied, which holds charge, and everything worked like new.

Phone with battery attached is 19.5cm high x 4cm wide x 8cm deep. Antenna is 17.5cm long. Weight of package is 1.52kg.

This rare phone is the same size as the DynaTAC series phones in being 8cm deep. Other manufacturers had brought out smaller phones by this time, so the Independent did not sell well.

This example is in very good used condition with some general wear and tear. It has been stored with a battery attached so there is some corrosion and verdigris on the terminals. It does power up, but is locked and needs a 3 digit code to unlock it, which we do not have. The battery is in good condition and holds some charge. The battery is charged via a socket in the side of the phone. The charger has a UK type 3-pin plug and is in very good condition.

This phone has a user manual, which is a bit squashed and an audio cassette "Talking Guide" which is unused and still in its cellophane wrapper. The original antenna was missing, so we have replaced it with a brand new non-original one. The phone is packaged in an inner cardboard box and then an outer wraparound card cover. The inner box is in reasonable condition, although it has damage to the lid. The outer card wraparound is in poor condition as it is ripped and very tatty

Phone with battery attached measures 19.5cm high x 4cm wide x 6cm deep. Antenna is 8.5cm long. Weight of package is 530g.

This phone is in good overall condition, except for the base, which has got damp, causing staining and the the terminals to deteriorate. As a result the phone does not power up and is being sold with a non-working battery. The battery also has some damage to the base. The non-original antenna is brand new. 

The package comprises of the phone, non-original battery and non-original antenna.

A nice addition to any collection, as this phone looks very good, apart from the base.

This new in the box phone is one of the last brick phones ever made. Made for the US market, where these giants are still used in some rural locations, this phone is perfect and unused. The phone and battery have the protective film on and the only time this phone has been out of the box was for these photos and to test the phone. We charged the battery using an adaptor and powered up the phone phone, which works as new.

This phone was made for the Australian market and was the last of the brick phones to be sold there. It is in excellent condition and looks new, apart from some staining on one of the battery contacts on the back. It comes with the original battery, case & antenna and powers up just like new, with the display and keypad in perfect working order. The original charger, which plugs into the side of the phone was not working, so we have replaced it with a non-original one.
