Sanyo M5550

Sanyo M5550 circa 1981. Serial No - 01631378.

Unit measures 13.5cm x 8.5cm x 2.5cm. Weight of package is 285g.

Takes 2 x AA batteries (not supplied) or 3v Dc (not supplied).

This is the first Sanyo personal stereo ever made and is of all metal construction and made to a very high standard. These are very sought after among collectors and considered one of the best personal stereos. It is in good, used condition with some marks and small dings. One of the strap holders is bent and the other one has broken off (see photos). The battery compartment is in good condition. The stereo features twin headphone sockets, high/low tone switch, talkline button, microphone, mix button and variable pitch control.

We tested the stereo with batteries and DC input and everything worked, although the sound from one of the headphone sockets is temperamental, which is probably caused by dust on the contacts . It is guaranteed to be delivered as described. See
The Smallprint
for details. Package consists of the stereo unit only.

Price is £79 including delivery to anywhere in the world by registered post.

JVC CQ-1K

JVC CQ-1K circa 1981. Serial No - 11754096.

Unit measures 13.5cm x 8.5cm x 3cm. Weight of package is 370g.

Takes 4 x AA batteries (not supplied) or 6v Dc (not supplied).

This is the first JVC personal stereo ever made and is of all metal construction and made to a very high standard. These are very sought after among collectors and considered one of the best personal stereos. It is in very good condition except for some marks and small dings on the front. The battery compartment is in very good condition, as is the case, although the lettering is worn. The stereo features high/low tone switch, normal metal selector and Dolby on/off switch.

We tested the stereo with batteries and DC input and everything worked, although when the volume control is adjusted there is crackling in the headphones and the volume is very low. This is very noticeable, particularly when the DC socket is used, as the tape can hardly be heard above the whine of the motor. This may be a problem of dust on the contacts, or a problem with the circuit board. It is guaranteed to be delivered as described. See

GE (General Electric) 3-5270B

General Electric 3-5270B circa 1981. Serial No - 550-388286.

Unit measures 16cm x 10.5cm x 3.5cm. Weight of package is 430g.

Takes 4 x AA batteries (not supplied) or 6v DC (not supplied).

This is the first ever personal stereo made by GE. It was known as the "Escape", although the only place that this is written is on the case (which is made in Japan, though the stereo is made in Singapore). It seems that it has been kept in the case, as it is in very good used condition, with some signs of use (mostly on the front) but nothing major. The case is a little more worn, and has a stain by the word "escape". Like many early personal stereos, it features twin headphone sockets and a mute button. It also has left and right volume controls and a high/low tone selector. The battery compartment is very good, although care must be taken when inserting and removing batteries, as the contact springs are very large and get in the way a bit.

We tested this stereo with batteries and a DC adaptor and everything worked as it should, although there is crackling when the volume is adjusted (usually caused by dust). This personal stereo is guaranteed to be delivered in the condition described and in working order. See The Smallprint for full details.

Infinity Intimate

Infinity Intimate circa 1981. Serial No - 81063013881.

Unit measures 16cm x 9.5cm x 3.5cm. Weight of package is 560g.

Takes 4 x AA batteries (not supplied) or 6v DC (not supplied).

This is a very rare personal stereo from the early eighties, made in Japan for Infinity Systems Inc. of California. It is in good used condition with scuffs, small scratches, general wear & tear and a crack in the plastic of the cassette lid (see photo) . It features twin headphone sockets, Dolby noise reduction and a metal tape selector. Originally it would have had a cassette tuner module, but this is missing. The battery compartment is very good, with no corrosion. The case is quite worn on the outside.

We tested this stereo with batteries and it plays well, but when we tested it with a DC adaptor it races along and chews up the tape in seconds. The sound is very crackly and hardly working in one headphone socket, so probably needs a good clean. This personal stereo is guaranteed to be delivered in the condition described. See The Smallprint for details. Package consists of the stereo unit and case.

Toshiba KT-S3

Toshiba KT-S3 circa 1982. Serial No - 29600384.

Unit measures 15cm x 9.5cm x 3cm. Weight of package is 450g.

Takes 4 x AA batteries (not supplied) or 6v DC (not supplied).

Almost identical to the KT-S1, this personal stereo is in very good used condition, with some wear and tear - particularly around the headphone sockets, but no major damage. It features twin headphone sockets, normal/metal tape selection and a button that instantly reduces the volume level (the small yellow button, built into the play button). The case and battery compartment are in very good condition. The FM receiver is cassette sized and works by putting it into the player and pressing play.

We tested this stereo with batteries and an DC adaptor and the radio works perfectly, but the cassette player does not work at all. We put in a new belt, but this did not help. The motor turns the belt, but the correct gears do not seem to engage. So this stereo is being sold as display only. It is guaranteed to arrive in the condition described. See
The Smallprint for details. Package comprises of the stereo unit and radio tuner.

Casio RD-10

Casio RD-10 circa 1985.

Unit measures 8.5cm x 5.5cm x 2mm. Weight of package is 24g.

Takes 1 x CR2016 battery (included).

This tiny FM radio receiver is exactly the same size as a credit card, although a little thicker. The coin size battery slots into the side. The single earpiece is attached to the side and turns the radio on when it is plugged in. It is in very good condition. The front has signs of wear, and scuffs, but the back still has the original protective plastic film on.

The radio works perfectly and is guaranteed to be delivered as described and in full working order. See
The Smallprint for details. Package comprises of the radio receiver, earpiece and battery.

Very very small and very very rare.

Price is £39 including delivery to anywhere in the world by registered post.
