Motorola DynaTAC

The world's first handheld mobile phone was the Motorola DynaTAC 8000x. It went on sale in 1983 in the US at the staggering price of $3995, and despite the price tag, was an instant success and had waiting lists of up to six months! It went on sale in the UK on 1st January 1985 and the very first phone call was made by Ernie Wise! It was followed in the UK in 1986 by the 8000s & in 1988 by the 8500x  and in the US in 1990 by the 8000m. These phones are all analogue, so will not work on modern networks as they do not use SIM cards.

Because these were the first truly mobile phones, they are amongst the most collectable and therefore amongst the most expensive. Please scroll down to see our current phones for sale. If you need more information, or photos before purchasing, please email us - sales@vintagemobilephones.com

DynaTAC 8000m

Motorola DynaTAC 8000m made in 1994. Model No - F09LFD8438AG. Serial No - 472GUJ2974.

Phone with battery attached measures 19.5cm high x 4cm wide x 8cm deep. Antenna is 14cm long. Weight of package is 1.45kg.

The 8000m was the follow up phone to the 8000x in the US and most examples, like this one, carry the network name, rather than the Motorola logo.

This phone is new in the box, with no signs of use. It still has the protective tape on the phone and battery. We tested it and all the keys work as they should. The battery holds plenty of charge. It comes with the charging stand, adaptor, antenna and user manual, all of which are also as new. The box itself is not in great condition and has wear, marker pen, sticky tape residue and a rip. The plastic inserts are also damaged and cracked and the box for the adaptor is coming apart.

This phone is guaranteed to power up for 30 days from delivery. See
The Smallprint for details.

The package comprises of the box, inserts, phone, battery, antenna, charging stand, adaptor with a US type 2-pin plug and user manual.

Very rare to find one of these phones in new condition.

Price is £229 including delivery by Registered Post to anywhere in the world.  SOLD

DynaTAC 8000s

Motorola DynaTAC 8000s made in 1986. Model No - F09DSD8924AN. Serial No - 645CLQ0114.

Phone with battery attached measures 19.5cm high x 4cm wide x 8cm deep. Antenna is 20cm long. Weight of package is 765g.

This phone is in very good used condition, with general wear and tear and some dings. One of the battery connectors has broken off the back, so the phone doesn't power up, so it is being sold with a non-working battery from a later phone. The antenna is quite bent.

The DynaTAC 8000s was the phone sold by Motorola, which replaced the 8000x. This example from 1986 is one of the earliest 8000s.

Package consists of the phone, battery and antenna.

Price is £139 including delivery to anywhere in the world by Registered Post.   SOLD

DynaTAC 8000m

Motorola DynaTAC 8000m made in 1992. Model No - F09LFD8436AG. Serial No - 472GSQV890.

Phone with battery attached measures 19.5cm high x 4cm wide x 8cm deep. Antenna is 14cm long. Weight of package is 1.41kg.

The 8000m was the follow up phone to the 8000x in the US and most examples, like this one, carry the network name, rather than the Motorola logo.

This phone is almost like new, with tiny signs of use. It looks as if someone has used it once, then put it straight back into the box. It powers up and all the keys work as they should. The battery holds plenty of charge. It comes with the charging stand, adaptor, antenna and user manual, all of which are also as new. The box itself is not in great condition and has wear, marker pen and sticky tape residue. The base of it looks like it has been standing in spilt coffee. The plastic inserts are also damaged and cracked.

This phone is guaranteed to power up for 30 days from delivery. See
The Smallprint for details.

The package comprises of the box, inserts, phone, battery, antenna, charging stand, adaptor with a US type 2-pin plug and user manual.

An almost new example of this sought after DynaTAC.

Price is £209 including delivery by Registered Post to anywhere in the world.    SOLD

DynaTAC 8500x

Motorola DynaTAC 8500x made in 1990. Model No - F09LGD8924CA. Serial No - 645DQN5791.

Phone with battery attached measures 19.5cm high x 4cm wide x 8cm deep. Antenna is 17cm long. Weight of package is 1.56kg.

The 8500x was the follow up phone to the 8000s in the US and was the first mass market mobile phone, particularly popular with builders in the late 1980's. This was because of price, both purchase price and contract price. The 8000x and 8000s that came before it were really only affordable to the wealthy.

This phone is in very good condition, with normal wear and tear. It powers up, with the battery provided, all the keys work and the screen is bright and clear. The battery is an after-market one, in good condition, which holds some charge. The antenna is a brand new replacement for the original. The charging stand is in very good condition and it comes with a UK type adaptor, that is not original. The case is very worn and has some damage.

This phone is guaranteed to power up for 30 days from delivery. See
The Smallprint for details.

The package comprises of the phone, battery, antenna, charging stand, adaptor with a UK type 3-pin plug and case.

Very nice example of this hugely popular phone.

Price is £109 including delivery by Registered Post to anywhere in the world.
